Skills training support

The SASET Employment Counselors who assist in delivery of employment services at Employment Assistance Services offices meet with Indigenous under/un-employed individuals (at SASET Outreach Offices and/or full-time employment centers located at Sto:lo, Seabird and Sts'ailes), who will assist individuals  with skills assessments and development, application completion to training programs and will ensure all needed supports are in place for individuals to move forward to training with employment results.

Skills Development funding is geared towards providing financial assistance for people in need of specific training to further their career goals to retain sustainable employment.

  •  Transition to Work Supports: assists individuals in need when receiving employment who may require; safety equipment, uniforms, transportation until first pay cheque, etc.
  • Short Term Training: up to 30 days of skills training towards employment
  • Long Term Training: up to one year of training supports, to a maximum of $10,000.00 per applicant. SASET often partners with WorkBC, First Nations Post-Secondary Education Administrators, etc  to co-sponsor individuals, which will lead to employment success.

***Please note: safety equipment is also funded during applied training where required and is not included in these numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Any self-identifying status, non-status, on or off reserve Indigenous person regardless of origin in Canada, who resides in the Stó:Lō Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training (SASET) catchment area. SASET's catchment area extends from Katzie/Langley to Boston Bar and the three communities of Samahquam, Skatin and Xa'xtsa, communities of the Lower Stl'atl'imx Tribal council.

Make an appointment to meet with a SASET Employment Counselor at any of our Employment Assistance Offices or Outreach locations.

  •  Complete initial intake process with Employment Counselor which  includes, past volunteer, employment, and education history
  • Explore employment and training options
  • Determine steps that need to be taken to bring you closer to your goal
  • Commitment to training, including, where possible, contribution towards expenses.

  •  The Employment Counselor will guide you through the Skills Training Supports application package process
  • They will make any necessary referrals along the way
  • They will assist in communicating with potential partners in funding (Ministry of Employment and Labour Standards, Band Administration, Social/Income Assistance, bursaries, scholarships, etc.)
  • Submit completed application to our SASET office for review
  • Communicate with SASET office assessing the completed package

  •  It all depends on the level of funding requested. The Transition to Work applications are very basic (one page application) and can be processed very quickly as long as the required information is attached: a letter from the employer stating the start date of employment, the supplies/equipment needed, and at least 2 quotes from different vendors on the cost of the requested supplies.
  • For longer term training, the applicant needs to complete an application package, with the assistance of your Employment Counsellor, that includes: a current resume, labour market information (employment opportunities in the training field), details on the cost of training, personal budget information, etc. Also a Criminal Records Check (if it pertains to raining requested).
  • The more complete the application package, the quicker the turn-around time in processing. As you can see, the information required takes some time to put together - so for a long term package, please ensure you have the required time prior to training commencement to submit a complete package and two weeks for package assessment for approval (application does not always result in sponsorship).
