Skills Development funding is geared towards providing financial assistance for people in need of specific training to further their career goals. This includes a wide range of training, from short term (one to thirty days) to long term (academic year). Training offered through private training organizations must be recognized by the Private Career Training Institutions Agency (PCTIA), Industry Training Authority (ITA), or the Ministry of Advanced Education. Some examples of training are:

Who is Eligible to Apply?

  • Any self-identifying status, non-status, on or off reserve First Nations or Inuit person regardless of origin, who resides in the Stó:Lō Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training (SASET) catchment area.

What Steps Do I Take to Start the Application Process?

  • Make an appointment to meet with a Career Development Practitioner (CDP) at any of our Employment Assistance Offices or Outreach locations.

What Are My Responsibilities?

  • Complete initial intake process with CDP including Personal Information and Client Consent Form, develop an action plan.
  • Share past volunteer, employment, and education history with CDP.
  • Explore employment and training options.
  • Determine steps that need to be taken to bring you closer to your goal.
  • Criminal Records Check.
  • Test of Workplace Essential Skills (TOWES) Assessment.
  • Commitment to training, including, where possible, contribution towards expense.

What are the Responsibilities of the Career Development Practitioner?

  • The CDP will guide you through the Skills Development application package process.
  • They will make any necessary referrals along the way (Structure of Intellect (SOI), Foundations, TOWES.
  • They will assist in communicating with potential partners in funding (Ministry of Employment and Labour Standards, Band Administration, Social/Income Assistance).
  • Submit completed application to our Stó:Lō Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training (SASET) office for review.
    Communicate with Program Officer at SASET office assessing the completed package.

How Long Does the Application Process Take?

  • It all depends on the level of funding requested. The Transition to Work applications are very basic (one page application) and can be processed very quickly as long as the required information is attached: a letter from the employer stating the start date of employment, the supplies/equipment needed, and at least 2 quotes from different vendors on the cost of the requested supplies.
  • For longer term training, the applicant needs to complete a 3 to 5 page application package, including: current resume, letter of support, labour market information relating to employment opportunities in the training field, details on the cost of training, personal budget information; assessment results; provide a letter of acceptance from the training institution; Criminal Records Check.
  • The more complete the application package, the quicker the turn-around time in processing. As you can see, the information required takes time to put together – so for a long term package, it could take 1 month or longer to gather all the necessary documentation and another month for the information to be processed. So ideally, you would start at least 2 months in advance of the training start date.
